We are renewed by God when He changes our old ways and conforms us to the way He wants us to be.
Colossians 3: 1-17
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth.
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
Mortify (deaden or subdue) therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
For which things’ sake wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience.
In the which ye also walked sometime when ye lived in them.
But now ye also put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.
Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
which there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bond or free: but Christ is all, and in all.
Put on therefore, at the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
forbearing one another and forgiving one another if any man have a quarrel against any; even as Christ forgave you so also do ye.
And above all things put on charity which is the bond of perfectness.
and let the peace of God rule in your heart, to the which also we are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.
As Christians we should continually renew our minds to think of heavenly things.
“to put to death” is used in the active voice in the sense of destroying the strength of, depriving of power, with reference to the evil desires which work in the body
In this light, we should put to death:
-sexual sin (immorality)
-doing evil (impurity)
-letting evil thoughts control you (passion)
-wanting things that are evil and selfishly wanting more and more(greed)
These are ways in which we should learn to control our body or what we do, but that is not enough; doing all this just makes you a good person. In order to be wholly controlled by God, you must let Him help you conquer the bad things that bring you down. He is the master of renewal.
You should put the following things out of your life:
Doing or saying things to hurt others
Using evil words when you talk
The above things are controlled by our fleshly emotions and will, but the more we let Jesus come in and control every thought, word and deed, we will stop doing fleshly things and start doing Godly things.
After we get rid of all the bad things they must be replaced with good things or they will start coming back in our life. We are living a new life and Christ is making us new and making us like Him. It is an ongoing process and ultimately brings us to God’s true knowledge.
Because we are God’s holy people and we are trying to be like Him we should do these things:
-show mercy to others
-be kind, humble, gentle, and patient
-do not be consumed with anger
-if someone does you wrong, forgive them quickly
-love each other
-let Christ renew your mind and control your thinking
-always be thankful
-let the teaching of Christ live in you
-use all wisdom to teach and strengthen each other
-sing with thankfulness in your heart
-everything you say and everything you do should all be done for Jesus
-in all you do give thanks
