Pride is something that the Christian must handle with care.
This is the dictionary meaning:
1. an undue sense of one’s own superiority; arrogance; conceit
2. a proper sense of personal dignity and worth; that of which one is justly proud
Pride manifests itself in disdain or haughtiness toward others.
Conceit is an exaggerated opinion of one’s ability or worth.
Pitfall is an unapparent source of trouble or danger, a hidden hazard
The Bible also has much to say about the subject:
I Peter 5: 5-6
…for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.
proud – (huperephanos – pronounced hoop-er-ay-fan-os)
signifies showing oneself above others, conspicuous, haughty (used in Scripture in the bad sense of arrogant or disdainful)
high-minded – (tuphoo – pronounced toof-o-o)
means to wrap in smoke (a metaphor for conceit), be lifted up, or puffed up
I John 2: 16
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the p of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Proverbs 11: 2
When p cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
Proverbs 13: 10
Only by p cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.
P goeth before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Mark 7: 20-23
That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, p, foolishness:
All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
The Bible gives definite instruction that a Christian should strive to be humble. God wants us to be a vessel that He can use to carry out His purposes here on earth. In order for Him to do that, we have to empty ourselves of pride, or thinking that we can do certain things on our own.
God wants to find Christians He can use to do mighty works through, but who will not get puffed up. He wants people who know that they could never do anything miraculous except through His Power.
We are just to be a conduit, and not the actual miracle-worker. God should always be the one who receives the glory. If you strive to be humble, He can use you greatly for His Kingdom work.
