The Sin of Omission means that you do not do what you know is right.
According to the dictionary omission means: anything omitted or neglected
It is the duty of a Christian to study the Bible with an open mind and heart. Many times what we read has to filter through our own perception of the truth, which might be right or wrong. It is for this reason that you should learn to hear the Holy Spirit as He speaks to you.
God expects every Christian to know the truth and abide by it, no matter his opinion. Many people believe that there are different kinds of truth and they can choose the one that is most convenient for them. When you feel this way, naturally you will choose the one that bothers your conscience the least.
An example of this would be starting an exercise program. We all know that exercise has been medically proven to keep us healthy and even prevent many diseases. We also know that it is something we really should find the time to do because of the benefits we will receive. However, it is easy to justify why we can’t find a few minutes each day to actually exercise. Everybody will tell you that it is a good thing, but few actually choose to discipline themselves to do it. It is easy to soothe your conscience by telling it that you will start tomorrow or next week. That way starting is not ruled out, it is just postponed. After all, it is something you are going to do soon.
The Bible gives specific instruction about many things, and the Christian does not have a choice about obedience, unlike whether to start an exercise program – that is, he doesn’t have a choice if he wants God to bless him.
James 4: 17
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
The dictionary definition of sin:
any offense against a standard; to violate any requirement of right or duty; a transgression, especially when deliberate, or a law having divine authority
The person who is truly seeking God wants to be convicted of any bad so that he can repent, be cleansed, and walk in His blessing. There is no more wonderful feeling than the cleansing of repentance. The bible says clearly that if you choose not to do good when you know you should, it is sin for you.
The best thing you can do is repent and do whatever it takes to make things right with God the very moment you are convicted you have done wrong. If you put it off, you have given Satan an opening and he can start to persuade you that what you have done is not so bad, or that you were justified in doing it. If you continue to put off repentance, your heart will start to gradually harden so that the Holy Spirit’s conviction will be harder and harder to hear.
Determine in your heart that you will follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and do what you know is right. Study God’s Word, find out what He has to say, and choose to walk in His truth. Don’t ever let Satan convince you to accept anything other than repentance and being clean before God.
